I have the answer to that. No. Absolutely not. It’s all going to come crashing down. Your worldly wisdom, your dollars, and your gold won’t save you (Ez 7). No doubt about it. It’s inevitable. God warned the Israelites of the results of rejecting Him as their king, but they did not relent and professed their desire for a worldly king (1 Sam 8). They wanted to be like everybody else. They rejected God as their king. That is still happening today. People continue to reject God and follow men, and the ways of the world instead. Where does it lead? Yeah, it doesn’t lead to a good place. Be careful what you ask for. God doesn’t make us serve Him. He doesn’t force us. Sadly, we often have to learn the hard way. On the other hand, joyfully, God is available when we do come to our senses and return to him.
Forgiveness…
Mark 11:25…“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."
Matthew 6:15…“But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”
Taken literally, these scriptures would not make much sense. Consider that God is love (1 John 4:16) and God directs us to forgive others….but then if we don’t….he doesn’t forgive us? Does that make sense to you? It sounds hypocritical to me, and I know God is not that. I’m convinced that these scriptures are really talking about fellowshipping with God, communing with God. You see, God doesn’t change (Mal 3:6). In Him is no shadow of turning (James 1:17). He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). For us to commune with God, we have to go where He is. You might say that God lives on that narrow road that Jesus speaks about in Matthew 7:14. Indeed, if we fail to forgive, hold grudges and ill will, etc, we cannot stay on that narrow path because it is the path of love, light, and life. Indeed, anytime we allow bitterness, hatred, ill will, anger, vindictiveness to control us, we are tormented (gnashing of teeth), and you might say, cast out into outer darkness. We will stay there until we learn otherwise (pay the last penny).
Personally, I don’t think these scriptures relate to salvation. If you truly have accepted God’s provision…namely Christ....you are saved. That doesn’t mean you will not fail at times. What that does mean, though, is at times you will fall out of true fellowship with God. Hopefully we will notice very quickly, repent, and enter back into fellowship with Him.
Matthew 18:34-35… In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. "This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart."
Matthew 5:25…"Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.”
Matthew 13:34…Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.
Aware of the devils schemes
1 Samuel 16:14-15 ¶ Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD tormented him. Saul’s attendants said to him, "See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.
I find this to be an interesting scripture and one that many have pondered but few have agreed upon. Personally, I’m considering the possibility that Saul’s experience is not entirely unique…that even you and I may occasionally experience something similar. First, I think the stage has to be set. Something, or someone, has to really cause you grief. The more personal, the more painful, the more frequent, the more likely that you could fall prey….that a seed of bitterness could find root. If you water that seed, if you allow it to grow, it can create an opportunity for the devil to take advantage of you. For that matter, the devil can remind you of the injustices, he can stir the pot. The next thing you know, indeed the Spirit of God has left you (after all, God is love), and an evil spirit is left to torment you.
I believe it is likely that the above scenario is not uncommon. What is the cure? Faithfulness. We have to take control. We have to submit to God…to resist evil…to forgive…to pray. We not only have to read what the Bible says, we have to understand it so that we can be aware of the devil’s schemes, and we have to do what it says (put on the full armour etc Ephesians 6:11).
Something I think we have to remember is that evil can spread. If one person is taken captive to do the devils’ will…what do you think the devil would have that person do? Break someone else down? The person that has been taken captive needs our prayers, not retaliation (Romans 12:20). Retaliation only feeds the fire.
Forgiveness...
I just finished watching the movie 'Into The Wild'. It left an impression. One thing really caught my ear. To paraphrase, if you don't forgive, you can't love. I thought how true. They kind of cancel each other out, don't they? You can't really love someone that you are holding something against. In not forgiving, you reap the results. Jesus said that if you didn't forgive men their trespasses, God would not forgive yours. Now I think I get it. After all, God is love, and he who lives in love lives in God and God in him. If you aren't living in love, you might say that you are reaping the whole God not forgiving you in a way, because you are not able to walk in His presence in that state. This comment by Jesus could well have been about the present, not necessarily judgement day. There may be something huge here. The keys to the kingdom. What you bind on earth you bind in heaven. What you loose on earth, will be loosed in heaven.
